What is the role of zinc metal in the extraction of silver?

Solution

$Z n$ acts as reducing agent. It reduces $A g^{+}$ to Ag and itself gets oxidised to $Z n^{2 +}$ which combines with $C N^{-}$ to form soluble complex.

$[A g (C N)_{2}]_{(a q)}^{-} + Z n_{(s)} \to 2 A g_{(s)} + [Z n (C N)_{4}]_{(a q)}^{2 -}$
