Solution

Statistics is the discipline that concerns the interpretation, analysis, organization, collection, and presentation of data. The scope of Statistics is very immense, the application of statistics goes into diverse fields such as solving social problems, industrial and scientific problems.

Statistics deals with every aspect of data, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.

Statistics – Applications

Some of the wide areas where statistics can be applied are given below

Academics

  • Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines, including social sciences, natural science, applied science, economics, business studies.
  • As per studies conducted on two tropical biology journals it was found that twelve most frequently used statistical tests were Linear Regression, Student’s T Test, Chi-Square Test, Spearman’s Rank Correlation Test , Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Tukey’s Test, Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Cluster Analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Shannon’s Diversity Index.

Mathematical Statistics, Applied Statistics, and Theoretical Statistics

Mathematical Statistics

Mathematical statistics includes design of experiments, computational statistics, manipulation of probability distributions required for finding results related to methods of inference and estimation.

Applied Statistics

  • Applied statistics constitutes application of inferential statistics and descriptive statistics.

Theoretical Statistics

  • Theoretical statistics encompasses mathematical statistics as well as the logical arguments underlying justification of approaches to statistical inferences.

Computational Statistics, or Statistical computing

  • Statistical computing is the interface between computer science and statistics.
  • Growing power of computing has also led to the increased popularity of computationally intensive methods based on resampling.

Business Statistics

  • In business field, statistics is a widely used decision support and management tool.

Machine Learning and Data Mining

  • Machine learning models are probabilistic and statistical models that capture patterns in the data through use of computational algorithms.
