What is sex ratio?

Sex ratio can be defined as the ratio of males to females in a population. In simpler words, it is the proportion of males in a population. According to Fisher’s principle, this ratio is 1:1 for most sexually reproducing species. The human sex ratio is, generally studied more than the ratio for any other species. It plays a tremendous role in the studies of anthropology and demography.

Sex ratio at different intervals of time

  • The sex ratio at birth for the world is 107:100. This is due to the higher foetal mortality in females.
  • As per the census of 2011, the sex ratio is 943 in India. That is, there are 943 females for every 1000 males.
  • Haryana has the lowest sex ratio in India among states at 879 girls for 1000 boys. This is due to the fact that in few villages of Harayana a girl child used to get killed before the birth or after the birth. The female foeticide and female infanticide was at the hight rate. Decreasing sex ratios pose dangers for the future female population in the country.
