What is the significance of the $G_0$ phase?

$G_0$ is the phase of the cell cycle, often termed the resting phase i.e in this phase the cell is arrested and does not proceed further for cell division.

Significance of $G_0$ phase:​

• $G_0$ phase maintains a specific number of cells in the organism so that uncontrolled growth does not occur.
  
• It decreases the probability of a cell turning cancerous as any cell that functions abnormally move back to the $G_0$ phase of the cell cycle. During this phase, the repair mechanism sets in for the normal functioning of the cell.
