Hepatic portal system:

  1. The hepatic system is a venous circulatory system that transports the blood from the stomach and intestine to the liver.
  2. Then from the liver, the deoxygenated blood is transported to the posterior vena cava through the hepatic vein.

Significance:

  1. The hepatic portal system helps in the storage of excess nutrients in the liver.
  2. It allows some nutrients like heparin, fibrinogen, prothrombin, and vitamin-A to circulate in the blood.
  3. Helps in the detoxification of food.
  4. Conversion of ammonia (harmful nitrogenous waste) into urea.
