Question

What is the significance of ionization enthalpy?

Open in App
Solution

Ionization enthalpy:-

  1. Ionization enthalpy or ionization energy is the amount of energy required for the removal of an electron from an isolated gaseous atom.
  2. Ionization enthalpy increases across a period from left to right and decreases as we go down the group.

Significance of ionization enthalpy:-

  1. Ionization enthalpy tells us about the metallic characteristics of an element.
  2. More the ionization energy is more will be the metallic character of the element.
  3. If the metallic character decreases we can say that the ionization enthalpy increases and hence the non-metallic character of that element increases.

Final answer:- Significance of ionization enthalpy: It tells us about the metallic character of an element and also about its reactivity too.
