What is the significance of pollination?

Open in App
Solution

Pollination:

The transfer of pollen grains (male reproductive cell) from an anther to the stigma of the same or another flower is called pollination.

Significance of pollination:

  1. It helps in the process of fertilization (fusion of male and female zygote to form a zygote) by bringing the male gamete closer to the female.
  2. Thus it helps in the production of fruits and seeds.
  3. It helps in the transfer of characters and traits from both the parents to the offspring.
  4. Due to pollination, premature abscission of the ovary is prevented.
