Question

What is the significance of the number of protons found in the atoms of different elements ?

Open in App
Solution

The number of protons = Atomic number.

Every atom has one or more protons in its nucleus; they are an essential component of the nucleus. The atomic number refers to the number of protons in the nucleus, which is the distinguishing feature of an element (represented by the symbol Z). Because each element has a different amount of protons, it has a different atomic number.

The number of protons in an atom is similar to the number of electrons to balance the charge and make an atom a neutral entity.

So, if we have the number of protons then the number of electrons can be easily found out and the electronic configuration of the atom as well.

Once the electronic configuration of an atom is drawn then it is easy to analyze the chemical properties and behavior of that atom.
