Question

what is the speed of light for plasma, solid, liquid and gas ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear User,
Solid, liquid, gases and plasma are the four states of matter. Speed of light in vacuum is 3 x108 m/s, but it changes in matter. The speed of light depends upon the medium. The speed of light slows down in the medium. The more the dense the medium is, the less will be the speed of light. Therefore, decreasing order of speed of light in the above four medium is :
vplasma> vgas > vliquid > vsolid
This is because molecules in solids are tightly packed i.e. it is more dense as compared to liquid. Liquid in turn is more dense than gases and Gases are more dense than Plasma.
