Magnification is the increase (or decrease) in size of an image produced by an optical system compared to the true size. The most commonly considered form of magnification is linear magnification, although angular magnification is sometimes also encountered.the usual symbol for power as a unit of magnification. More generally, × or x is used with its mathematical meaning, "times," to indicate that a measurementis a multiple of some standard or reference measurement.
To figure the total magnification of an image that you are viewing through the microscope is really quite simple. To get the total magnification take the power of the objective (4X, 10X, 40x) and multiply by the power of the eyepiece, usually 10X.
