Question

What is the use of determining the pitch of a screw gauge?

Open in App
Solution

Screw gauge:

  1. A screw gauge is a device or equipment that is used to precisely measure the diameter of a thin wire, the thickness of a sheet of metal, or the shape of a spherical or cylindrical item.
  2. It is made up of a U-shaped frame with a screwed spindle connected to a thimble.

Pitch:

  1. The pitch of the screw gauge is defined as the distance moved by the spindle per revolution which is measured by moving the head scale over the pitch scale in order to complete one full rotation.
  2. The major scale is the pitch scale, which may be visualized as a vertical line connected to the instrument.
  3. Millimeters per rotation are the units of measurement.
  4. A circular scale is placed horizontally.
  5. A micrometer screw gauge is a circular scale with a half-millimeter displacement.

Application:

  1. Pitch, which is expressed as threads per inch, is frequently used with inch-sized items.
  2. Ball screws are often stated in terms of lead, which is the amount of linear movement the nut makes during one screw turn.
  3. In the case of single start screws, pitch and lead are equal.
