The undesirable change in physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of air, water, or soil by pollutants is known as environmental pollution.

Importance of controlling environmental pollution:

  1. Maintaining ecosystem:
    Environmental pollution leads to an imbalance in every biotic and abiotic factor of the eco-system leading to the disruption of the cycle of nature; it affects the flora and fauna in the environment leading to ultimate adverse effects on human well-being.
  2. Ozone layer depletion:
    Environmental pollution is leading to the depletion of the ozone layer which is a protective sheath around the Earth's atmosphere; this sheath helps in protection against harmful radiations of the sun. Depletion of this layer is resulting in various diseases like cancers and mutational disorders.
  3. Extinction of species:

Environmental pollution has a major role in the extinction of various species which leads to the malfunctioning of the food web in the ecosystem.
