Question

What is an unbiased condition?

Solution

An unbiased condition:

  1. The minority charge carriers in the n region and p region are holes and electrons in a p-n junction diode.
  2. When there is no external energy source, the condition is unbiased.
  3. When the p-n junction is unbiased, the current is zero because the drifting of charge is the same from both sides.
  4. There is no net movement of charge in a particluar direction so the current is zero.
  5. In an unbiased diode, the depletion layer between the n-type and p-type materials is where the electric field is set up.
  6. This barrier potential for a silicon diode is roughly 0.7Vat ambient temperature.
  7. The width of the depletion layer in the unbiased conditions is about1μm.
