Question

What is the weakest molecular attraction?

Open in App
Solution

Intermolecular forces: The forces of attraction or repulsion existing among the particles of a substance that hold the atoms and molecules together are known as Intermolecular Forces. The weakest intermolecular force is the London dispersion forces.

London dispersion force:

  1. London dispersion forces are temporary attractive forces that develop temporary dipole and hence they are also known as induced- dipole-induced-dipole.
  2. London dispersion is present in the non-polar and monoatomic gas.
  3. Example: Noble gas elements such as Helium.
  4. The constant motion of electrons will develop a temporary dipole.
  5. Therefore, London dispersion forces are the weakest forces.
