Thinai is a type of poetic mode or theme in which classical Tamil poems are set in classes which refer to a particular habitat or ecozone.
These poems are also based on one of the two themes which are:
Akathinai - The word Akam means interior. It is related to situations related to love and family life
Purathinai - The word Puram means exterior. It deals with exterior factors mainly with war and heroism
There are five Thinais which are called Ainthinai and each of these have their own god or goddess, occupation, people and cultural life which is related to the environmental conditions of that region. The five Thinais are:
