Question

What is total internal refraction and what is meant by optical fiber?

Solution

Total internal reflection(TIR)

  1. Total internal reflection(TIR) happens when the light is traveling from a denser medium to a rarer medium.
  2. If the angle between the incoming light and the standard of the border is higher than the angle described as the critical angle, TIR takes place.
  3. There is no light reflected goes into the 2nd medium and all light is reflected in this effect.

Optical fibers (OF)

  1. Optical fibers (OF) are thin, elastic, translucent wires with a small diameter manufactured of glass or plastic.
  2. It is used to transmit light and is commonly employed in OF communications because they allow for longer distances and increased bandwidth transmission. The optical concept of "TIR" is used to collect light sent through an optical fiber(OF) and restrict it to the fiber's core.
  3. A light-carrying middle core of an OF is surrounded by a coating that captures the core's light.
