Question

What is transduction in the eye?

Open in App
Solution

Phototransduction:

  1. Visual phototransduction is the term used to describe the sensory transduction of the visual system.
  2. In the rod cells, cone cells, and photosensitive ganglion cells of the retina of the eye, light is transformed into electrical signals.
  3. The rods and cones in the retina are specialized cells that transform light energy into neuronal activity.
  4. Light-sensitive pigments on the discs in the outer segments of the rods and cones enable this conversion.
  5. The retina contains both rods and cones, which are dispersed in different ways.
  6. Rods are very sensitive, night vision-specific cells.
  7. Cones, which are quicker but less sensitive photoreceptors, mediate day vision when rods' responses to intense light are saturated.
