Gymnosperm leaves typically have transfusion tissue surrounding the vascular bundles that consist of both live cells like those of parenchyma with non-lignified walls and thin-walled but lignified tracheids with bordered pits.
The transfusion tissue's primary job is to move substances between the mesophyll and the vascular bundles, thus performing the function of lateral veins.
They are also known as hydrostereon.
It is found in Pinus and Cycas leaves or leaflets.
