Question

What is treadmilling?

Open in App
Solution

Treadmilling:

  1. Treadmilling is a process that is seen in actin filaments and microtubules, among other cellular cytoskeletal filaments.
  2. A segment of the filament seems to "move" through a stratum or the cytosol when one end of the filament lengthens while the other end shortens.
  3. This is caused by the protein subunits in these filaments being continuously removed from one end of the filament while being continuously added to the other end.
  4. Treadmilling behavior is well established in actin filaments, the other main cytoskeletal polymer, however, its importance in the function of microtubules in the cell is to be known.
