A coordination number is the number of ions and atoms around a central neutron or the total number of attachment locations to the central element in a molecule. The packing of constituent particles inside lattice in such a way that they occupy maximum available space in the lattice is known as Close Packing. The packing in which one sphere touches two spheres placed in two different rows one above and one below is known as square closed packaging. The coordination number here is 4.
