Valence electrons - Number of electrons present in the outermost shell are called valence electrons.

For example, Sulphur (S)₁₆ - $\underset{\mathrm{K}}{2}$, $\underset{\mathrm{L}}{8}$, $\underset{\mathrm{M}}{6}$

So, M is the valence shell and 6 are valence electrons.
