  1. The ventral term has been derived from a Latin word 'venter' meaning 'belly'.
  2. Therefore, it refers to the surface to the front or lower side of an organism.
  3. The front side of the body of the human is the ventral side.
  4. In fishes the surface that faces the bottom and has ventral fins is the ventral side.
  5. In leaves, however, the side facing the sun, i.e., upper surface is the ventral side.

Dorsal:

  1. The dorsal term has been derived from a Latin word 'dorsum' meaning 'back'.
  2. Therefore, it refers to the surface to the back or upper side of an organism.
  3. The back side of the body of the human is the dorsal side.
  4. In fishes the surface that faces the upper surface of water and has dorsal fins is the dorsal side.
  5. In leaves, however, the side facing against the sun, i.e., lower surface is the dorsal side.
