The conversion of winter variety into spring variety by low temperature or chilling treatment is known as vernalisation. It is the process of shortening of vegetative phase and initiation of reproductive phase by the previous application of low temperature (0-4°C ) to moistened seeds and young plants. Low temperature treatment is required by a number of temperate plants like winter wheat, winter rye, cabbage, Henbane and certain perennial plants like apple.
