What is Watan Jagir?

Watan Jagirs were the persons who collected taxes from each village and gave them to mansabdars and mansabdars gave the taxes to the authority. The rulers of Amer and Jodhpur served as vassals under the Mughals, and they were awarded watan jagirs (regions or provinces) which they could rule independently.

Mansabdars

As the Mughal empire expanded, Mughals recruited Afghans, Rajputs, Marathas, Iranians, Turkish Nobles etc. People who joined Mughal service were enrolled as Mansabdars. With a rank of 5000 Zat, there were 29 Mansabdars during the reign of Akbar. When Aurangazeb was ruling, the number of Mansabdars had increased to 79.

Mansabdar refers to an individual who holds a position or rank known as Mansab. Mughals used it as a grading system to fix

  • Rank – A Mansabdar with a Zat of 1000 was ranked lower than the mansabdar with a Zat of 5000.

Military responsibilities and Salary – Mansabdar

  • As per military responsibilities, the Mansabdar had to maintain a certain number of cavalrymen or known as Sawar.
  • The Mansabdar had to get his cavalrymen registered, they were required to be reviewed and branding of their horses were done.
  • Then the salary was paid.
