Question

What is wave energy? How is it used to generate electricity?

Open in App
Solution

Wave energy

  1. Wave energy is the energy harnessed from the ocean's powerful and massive waves.
  2. Waves are produced in the ocean due to strong winds.

Electricity generation from wave energy

  1. When a strong wind blows across the sea, it causes huge waves, and huge waves are channelized into a raised reservoir.
  2. The trapped water collected in the reservoir is now allowed to flow back to the sea through a turbine.
  3. Due to the flow of water through the turbine, the turbine started rotating.
  4. The rotating turbine connected with the armature through the shaft also starts rotating.
  5. The armature connected with the generator creates a magnetic field and produces electricity.
