Zona pellucida:

  1. Zona pellucida is a glycoprotein layer that surrounds the mammalian oocytes.
  2. Zona pellucida is normally present between the plasma membrane of oocytes & the corona radiata.
  3. Zona pellucida also plays a very important role in successful fertilization.
  4. It is normally present between oocytes & follicular cells and acts as a link between them at the time of oogenesis.
  5. It also protects oocytes or eggs and embryos during the development stage.
  6. It initiates an acrosome reaction for the binding and penetration of the sperm cells.
  7. It helps in preventing polyspermy.
