What iz the cause of diagonal relationship between elements of 2nd and 3rd periods?
Okay excellent question first of all. The whole play of the relationship between different elements is because of the different trends as observed in different elements. Confused ?
So basically the diagonal relationship majorly between 2nd and 3rd period of the periodic table between the elements such as Li and Mg, Be and Al, B and Si .
As we go from left to right in a periodic table certain properties change in such a way that they neutralize the effect of the change in properties on going down the group so as to form a relationship with them that other elements fail to show.
More clearly speaking as we go from left to right in a periodic table:—
1)No.of shells remain same , effective nuclear charge increases and hence size decreases.
2)The covalent nature increases due to less electronegativity difference.
3) The electronegativity increases due to more effective nuclear charge.
And as we go from up to down in a periodic table :—
1)No.of shells increases and hence the size increases.
2) The ionic nature increases due to more electronegativity difference .
3) The electronegativity decreases due to less effective nuclear charge.
Referring above and comparing Li Be Mg .
Li:— More size, More ionic, Less electronegative
Be ( w.r.t. Li) :— Less size, More covalent, More electronegative
Mg(w.r.t Be) :—More size, More ionic, Less electronegative.
This shows there is a diagonal relationship between Li and Mg and can be used for other 2nd and 3rd elements. But is this enough to prove this NO.
The more clear explanation lies in the fact that the ionic size and nuclear charge more correctly speaking THE CHARGE UPON SIZE RATIO is very very much similar which makess those properties similar as mentioned above. This is the reason and that is the conclusion and hence an explanation for your question.
Li+ Small size of the atom and +1 charge
Mg2+Mg being comparitively large size than Li but more charge making it similarly sized to Li
Hence making it possible for Mg to exhibit similar chemical and physical properties as Li thus exhibiting diagonal relationship with Li.
The same may be considered for other elements of 2nd and 3rd period. I hope you got your answer. Feel free to ask more .
