Question

What kind of crops grow in the uplands of Penamakuru?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  1. Define upland crops
  2. Give names of the crop and season when they are cultivated
Answer:
Crops which are grown on elevated areas are termed as the ‘upland crops’.
  • Turmeric, banana, and yam are grown in the uplands. These are sown with the arrival of rains and harvested in February-March.
  • Highlands are suitable for growing vegetables like brinjal, ladyfinger, ivy gourd, ridge guard, and cabbage. These are later sold in Vuyyuru Rythu bazaar which is around 7 km from Penamakuru Village.
  • On the banks of River Krishna and upland areas of the village have fruit-bearing trees and orchards of guava, sapota, and papaya. As soil near the river contains more sand, it retains less moisture which makes it suitable for growing fruit-bearing trees. Hence, crops like paddy do not grow well on sandy soils.
