Question

What kind of reaction is rusting of iron?explain.

Open in App
Solution

Rusting of Iron is a combination reaction.
Fe + H2O + O2 ---> Fe2O3.xH2O
Many reactants combine to give a single product, rust.

During rusting, iron combines with oxygen in the presence water. This is an oxidation reaction where oxygen acts as an oxidising agent.

Since oxygen also combines with the metal iron, this is a reduction reaction, where the metal iron acts as a reducing agent.
