The National Assembly in France passed the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen on August 4, 1789.This abolished the rights of the nobility to demand taxes, tithes and labour from the peasants working on their family lands.It wiped out the feudal system and the obligations of taxes. Even land owned by the Church had been taken away.
