What length of a solid cylinder 2cm in diameter must be taken to recast into a hollow cylinder of length 16cm, external diameter 20cm and thickness 2.5mm?
Length of hollow cylinder (h) = 16 cm
External diameter = 20 cm
∴ External radius (R) = 202= 10 cm
Thickness of iron = 2.5 mm
∴ Internal radius (r) = 10 - 0.25 = 9.75 cm
∴ Volume of iron = πh(R2−r2)
=227×16×(19.75)(0.25)cm3
=3527×4.9375cm3
Now volume of iron = 3527×49375cm3
Diameter of solid cylinder = 2 cm
∴ Radius(r) =22=1 cm
Let h be the length, then
Volume = πr2h
∴πr2h=3527×4.9375
⇒h=227×1×1×h=3527×4.9375
⇒h=3527×4.9375×722
= 16 ×4.9375 = 79 cm
