Solution

## The correct option is A 11.696 m Given: Height of mercury column h1 = 0.86 m Let h2 be the height of the water column which will produce the same pressure as height 0.86 m of the mercury column. If pressures are equal h1ρ1g = h2ρ2g Then h2 = h1ρ1ρ2 ( ρ1 and ρ2 are densities of mercury and water respectively.) It is given that ρ1 = 13.6×ρ2 ⇒ρ1ρ2 = 13.6 Hence, h2 = 13.6×0.86 So, length of water column required = 11.696 m.
