Air pollution is highly detrimental to human beings. Some of the harmful effects of air pollution on human beings are as follows:
(a) Polluted air increases the occurrence of respiratory disorders, especially in children.
Particular matter in polluted air may cause asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, etc.
(b) Carbon monoxide concentration is more in polluted air. Carbon monoxide when inhaled leads to headache, giddiness, reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, and sometimes death.
(c) Sulphur dioxide is poisonous. Even a small amount of sulfur dioxide causes respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, etc. It causes irritation to the eyes, resulting in tears and redness.
(d) Hydrocarbons are carcinogenic. They cause cancer.
