Question

What mass of dilute nitric acid will be required to dissolved 5g of calcium carbonate?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given information

  • Mass of calcium carbonate CaCO3=5g

Step 2: Reaction involved

  • Calcium carbonate CaCO3 reacts with nitric acid HNO3 to form Water H2O, Carbon dioxide CO2 and Calcium nitrate CaNO32.
  • The balanced reaction is as follows:

CaCO3s+2HNO3aqH2Ol+CO2g+CaNO32aq

Step 3: Calculate the mass of calcium carbonate and nitric acid

The atomic mass of Ca = 40g

The atomic mass of C = 12g

The atomic mass of O = 16g

The atomic mass of H = 1g

The atomic mass of N = 14g

MassofCaCO3=40g+12g+16g×3=100g

MassofHNO3=1g+14g+16g×3=63g

Massof2molesofHNO3=2×63g=126g

Step 4: Mass of dilute nitric acid

  • 100g calcium carbonate dissolved in 126g nitric acid.
  • 5g of calcium carbonate will dissolve 126g100g×5g=6.3g nitric acid.

Therefore, 6.3g of dilute nitric acid will be required to dissolved 5g of calcium carbonate
