Question

What number must be subtracted from each of the numbers 13,17,34,42 so that the resulting four numbers are in proportion?

Open in App
Solution

Let the number to be subtracted be x
Since after subtrction they will all be in proportion
13x17x=34x42x
Cross multiplying
(13x)(42x)=(34x)(17x)
13(42x)x(42x)=34(17x)x(17x)
54613x42x+x2=57834x17x+x2
Rearranging the terms
54655x=57851x
55x+51x=578546
4x=32
x=324
x=8
So 8 should be subtracted for the numbers to be in proportion.
