Yes this sentence is meaningful. It can be seen in the light of the story. Jaya and Velu were two hungry children who survived on the food that was thrown away as waste. The food was probably invaluable to others but for them it kept their body nourished and strong. They even collected the waste materials like plastic bottles, glass pieces which were not of importance to others. By collecting it they were able to sell it in return for some money to feed themselves. Jaya even offered Velu a pair of thrown away shoes that had no laces. This protected his feet and he did not feel the heat from walking barefoot.
