Question

What opposes the pulling forces of the meiotic spindle in metaphase I?

Open in App
Solution

Metaphase I:

  1. In metaphase I, the chromosomes reach the center of the cell and orient themselves in an equatorial plane.
  2. The pulling force of the meiotic spindle at metaphase I is only opposed by the sister chromatid.
  3. The sister chromatids are pairs of identical copies of DNA joined at a point called the chromatid.
  4. The sister chromatids are said to be the pair of identical copies that joined at a point called the centromere.
  5. Cohesion, which is at the centromere is protected in meiosis I, allowing homologs to separate while sister chromatids remain linked until meiosis II.
