North America accounts for 20% of world manufacture of wood and nearly 40% of world production of developed Roundwood. The United States currently accounts for 70% of the timber harvest in North America and Canada account for about 25%. In both the United States and Canada, more than 80% of timber harvested is used as raw material for manufacturing products. Coniferous species account for more than two-thirds of the total volume harvested in the United States and Canada. Mexico's share of total timber harvest in the region is small (5 %), and the mainstream of wood harvested (nearly 70%) is fuelwood. Less than 5% of timber harvesting in Mexico occurs in tropical hardwood forests.
