We should take precautions while reading a clinical thermometer. Some of them are as follows:

  1. We should wash the thermometer before and after using it, especially when it is used with an antiseptic solution.
  2. We should confirm that the mercury level should be below the value of 35oC.
  3. We should take reading of the thermometer, while the level of the mercury is kept along the line of sight.
  4. We do not hold the thermometer bulb while taking reading.
  5. We have to handle the thermometer with special care because if it hits a hard object, it will break.
