When ethyl methyl ether is treated with HI, it gives methyl iodide and ethyl alcohol. The smaller alkyl reacts with iodide and bigger alkyl reacts with H+.
CH₃-CH₂-O-CH₃ + HI -----> CH₃-CH₂-OH + CH₃-I
