Chemical formula:

  • The symbolic representation of a molecule of a compound is called its chemical formula.
  • To write the formula of a chemical substance, the valency and the symbol of the various atoms or radicals present in it must be known.

For example, the chemical formula of sulphuric acid is H2SO4.

  • The chemical name of NH3 is ammonia.
  • In this formula, there are 3 atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of nitrogen.
  • This compound mostly exists in a gaseous state and has a pungent smell which is it's characteristic.
  • It causes irritation in the eyes, skin, nose, lungs as well as in the throat.
  • Ammonia is used in many biological processes and is also found in many industrial applications.
