Question

What removes ammonia from the body?

Open in App
Solution

Excretion:

  1. Excretion is the biological process of the elimination of metabolic waste from the body.
  2. The excretory products to be excreted out by the body are amino acids, urea, uric acid, carbon dioxide, water, and ammonia.
  3. Ammonia is very toxic and requires a very large amount of water to expel outside from the body, therefore it is best suited for aquatic organisms.
  4. Whereas urea, on the other hand, is more appropriate for terrestrial organisms like humans as it requires less water and is energy-efficient to remove in comparison to uric acid.
  5. Therefore, ammonia is converted to urea in the liver and then excreted by the kidneys.
