Given:
Value of resistance, R1 = 8 Ω
Equivalent resistance to be obtained, Req = 4.8 Ω
Let the resiatance of the resistor to be connected be R2.
For a parallel combination of resistors,

Req=R1×R2R1+R2

4.8=R2×88+R2

38.4+4.8R2=8R2

R2=38.43.2=12 Ω

So, to make an equivalent of 4.8 Ω, a resistance of 12 Ω needs to be connected in parallel to the given resistance.
