Question

What results in desertification, global warming and shortage of forest products?

Open in App
Solution

Deforestation:

  1. Deforestation is the removal or clearing of forest from an area for industrial, agricultural or other purposes.

Shortage of forest products:

  1. Deforestation means destruction of forests.
  2. Hence deforestation causes shortage of products that are obtained from forests.

Global warming:

  1. Deforestation can increase the temperature of Earth.
  2. Plant absorbs CO2 from atmosphere for photosynthesis.
  3. If plants are destroyed, the CO2 level in atmosphere will increase.
  4. This CO2 will trap more solar radiation which leads to global warming.
  5. Hence deforestation is associated with global warming.

Desertification:

  1. Desertification is the formation of desert and it is a main consequence of deforestation.
  2. In absence of trees, the soil erodes more rapidly.
  3. This soil erosion exposes the underlying rocky layer and this leads to loss of humus.
  4. The land becomes less fertile due to the loss of humus.
  5. Eventually, this sterile land becomes desert and this process is called desertification.

Final answer: Deforestation results in desertification, global warming and shortage of first products.
