Oilseeds play an important role in the economy of India. India is the largest producer of oilseeds in the world. About 20 percent of India's net sown area is devoted to oilseed cultivation. Oilseed cultivation, therefore, is a major source of income for farmers. India also exports oil and oilseed like groundnuts, although the volume of such exports is not very high due to increasing domestic consumption. The oil extracted from oilseed is a major part of the diet of people in India.
