Given $3 x^{2} - 2 x + 8 + a = 4 x^{2} - x + 2$
$a = (4 x^{2} - x + 2) - (3 x^{2} - 2 x + 8)$
$= 4 x^{2} - 3 x^{2} - x + 2 x + 2 - 8$
$= x^{2} + x - 6$
