Let the value y be added to $7 x^{2} - 5 x + 1$ to give $3 x^{2} + 4 x + 7$
$y = 3 x^{2} + 4 x + 7 - (7 x^{2} - 5 x + 1)$
$= 3 x^{2} + 4 x + 7 - 7 x^{2} + 5 x - 1$
$= - 4 x^{2} + 9 x + 6$
