Question

What should be length of Steel and Copper Rods at 0oC that the length of steel is always 5cm longer than copper, given α for steel N Copper are 1.7×105 and 1.1×105

Solution

For linear expansion of rods
L=Lo(1+αT)
Let LS and LC be the lengths of steel and copper rods respectively.
The difference in the length remains constant if,
LSLC=αCαS=1711(1)
Also, LSLC=5cm(2)
From (1) and (2), we get
Length of steel Rod LS=14.17cm
Length of Copper Rod LC=9.17cm
