Question

What should be minimum wavelength (in Ao) of a photon if it has to show pair production?

Open in App
Solution

For a photon to show pair production :

hv=01e+0+1e, since two particles (i.e., position and electron) are formed, the minimum energy associated with photon should be at least equal to E=2×me×c2(where c is velocity of light)

E=2×9.11×1031×(3.0×108)2=1.64×1013J

Also, E=hcλ

λ=6.626×1034×3.0×1081.64×1013J=1.2×1012m=121Ao

Since, E1λ

Thus, the minimum wavelength of photon should be 121Ao.

This wavelength belongs to Xrays.
