Question

What should be the pressure inside a small air bubble of 0.1 mm radius situated just below the surface of water? Surface tension of water = 72×103 N/m and atmospheric pressure = 1.013×105N/m2.

Solution

Given that,

Radius of air bubble r=0.1mm=103m

Surface tension of water T=72×103N/m

Atmospheric pressure Patm=1.013×105N/m2

We know that,

The pressure is

ΔP=PiPo=2Tr

Pi=P0+2Tr

Pi=1.013×105+2×72×103103

Pi=(1.013+0.00144)×105

Pi=1.014×105N/m2

Hence, the required pressure inside a small air bubble is 1.014×105N/m2
